Pattern Testing
What is pattern testing?
Pattern testing is a fun and meaningful part of bringing a quilt pattern to life. Testers receive an early version of a pattern and are asked to sew a quilt top and share their feedback. Your notes and observations help me fine-tune instructions, diagrams, and flow so the final pattern is clear, accurate, and enjoyable for all skill levels.
What’s my pattern testing process?
When you apply, you’ll be added to my general tester pool.
Whenever I have a new pattern ready, I’ll reach out to around 6–8 testers with all the basic details — including a mock-up, timeline, and expectations — so you can decide if you’d like to join that particular test.
If you’re selected, you’ll receive the pattern and full test information by email. Most tests run 4–6 weeks. At the end, testers send in their feedback and photos of their quilt top.
What I ask of my testers.
Complete the test by the deadline.
The most important requirement is sending in your feedback and quilt top photos on time. If something unexpected happens (it always does!) just let me know as soon as possible by email or Instagram message. Communication is key. Testers who don’t finish and don’t reach out may not be asked to test again.
Make a quilt top.
You only need to sew the top — no basting, quilting, or binding required. Feel free to use any fabrics you like: scrappy, yardage, thrifted sheets, upcycled clothing… whatever sparks joy.Provide pattern feedback.
I especially appreciate notes on:
– cutting and prep
– construction steps
– clarity of written instructions
– diagrams and layoutShare quilt top photos.
Clear, well-lit photos are perfect. They don’t need to be professional. Photos may be shared (with credit!) on Instagram, my website, or on the shop listing for the pattern.
Optional: If you’d like to help spread the word, a social media shout-out or telling a quilting friend is always appreciated — but never required.
Note: You must have a public Instagram page to apply.
What you can expect from me.
A well-edited pattern.
Before sending anything to testers, I triple-check the math, make test blocks, and thoroughly edit my patterns.
Clear communication.
You’ll always get the information you need to start confidently, and if anything changes during testing, I’ll notify you promptly by email or IG chat.
A thank-you package.
Every tester receives:
– a free finalized copy of the pattern
What do testers get?
A free copy of the finalized pattern you’ve helped test
Instagram features — I share and tag your quilt top, one tester at a time, so your work really gets seen and appreciated
Are testers paid?
At this time, pattern testing for Will-o-Wisp Quilting is a volunteer opportunity.
What if I can’t afford fabric or supplies?
You are always welcome to use what you already have — I love scrappy quilts and upcycled materials!
I also never want cost to keep anyone from joining. If you need help acquiring materials for testing, you can indicate that on the application form. If you’re selected, I’ll work with you privately to make sure you get what you need — whether that’s fabric from my stash, a partner gift card, or donated supplies.
I want pattern testing to feel joyful, inclusive, and welcoming for all quilters.
How do I apply to be a pattern tester?
Simply fill out the application form to join the tester pool. I keep an ongoing list of interested quilters, and if I think you’d be a great fit for an upcoming pattern test, I’ll reach out with details and an invitation.
